| A blacksmith works with metal. Also known as a smithy they traditionally replaced shoes on horses or forged parts for farm machinery from wrought iron. The metal is heated to a high temperature and then struck on an anvil with a hammer. There was a time when every village throughout the country used to have at least one blacksmith. More commonly nowadays a blacksmith may sharpen cutting tools like chisels or drills. Those with creative skills can even create metal furniture, garden gates or railings for example which are still quite popular. Wrought iron is quite hard to find today as not alot is produced. Steel is now the most common material used. |
